William J Turkel is Associate Professor of History at the University of Western Ontario and Director of Digital Infrastructure for NiCHE: Network in Canadian History & Environment, a SSHRC-funded strategic knowledge cluster. He is the author of The Archive of Place: Unearthing the Pasts of the Chilcotin Plateau (UBC Press, 2007). His current work focuses on the histories of measurement, materials science and machine tools, and draws on both historical research methods and hands-on, experimental fabrication. His digital humanities projects include Digital History Hacks (2005-08) and The Programming Historian. He worked for many years as a professional programmer, and received his PhD from MIT in 2004.
