I manage the public-facing website at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and I recently led the multi-year redesign of the site. Since the late 1990s, I've worked on the design, development, and production of museum and educational websites, ranging from the Berkeley Art Museum website to one of the first K-12 curriculum websites, CCCnet. I am on the international program committee of Museums and the Web, and I'm a past board member of the Museum Computer Network. I've taught and lectured on various issues relating to technology in museums and education for institutions including the University of San Francisco, JFK University, Cal State Monterey Bay, and San Francisco City College.

I know about

  • Large-scale, complex website redesigns, from the planning phase to the post-launch life
  • The realities of implementing and managing technology projects in museums
  • How to implement processes and practices amidst chaos
  • User research and user-centered design applied to museum projects
  • Applying Agile software methodologies to museum development projects
  • How to cobble together teams of in-house staff, freelancers, outside firms, vendors, and interns to make something happen

I want to learn about

  • Applying best practices from the for-profit and high-tech world to museums
  • How to champion strategic planning and digital strategy
  • How to think systemically about new technologies
  • How to develop new and innovative uses of technology that are sustainable with existing resources
  • HTML 5 and what it means for Flash
  • Mobile platforms development and how it fits with website development and a web CMS
